Update on the mango tree in SAJA

In December 2010, the first Kumon EIC Study Tour in Jakarta. Study Tour members visited SAJA (School of Street Children) and had a fun time with a lot of children. At that time, they planted 2 mango trees together.



In December 2013, Ken, Masa, Maza, Yuko and Mika visited SAJA and met Mr. Reinherd Hutabarat, who is the founder of SAJA, and some children. And now the mango tree has grown taller than the SAJA’s building. Unfortunately, one of the mango trees was cut down by a car accident. But one mango tree still there and keeps growing! We were very happy to see it. We hope EIC family can, one day, eat mangos with SAJA kids in the future.

'Love Chain Message' - Series

Hello everyone!

This is Maza from GNT office. We (GNT) are starting the series called 'Love Chain Message' which is to share messages from EIC Family member and also to find out how other members are doing too.

Hello Everyone!
How are you doing? Hope everything is going well with you. :)

My name is Aiko. I was a member of Kumon English Immersion Camp office from 2001 to 2007.
I left Kumon office in 2008, and now living in Miyazaki.

I want to share with EIC Family members a little about 'My Dream'. Do you remember the EIC activity named “Making Dream Poster”?

First, we talk and make images of what we want to do or what we want to be in the future. Then we draw a picture of future image on the paper. Some were cutting the magazines and paste photos on the paper. It was very fun! I am sure many of you loved it.

In EIC2006, I made my Dream Poster. Actually it was a Camp Leader training. I acted one of participants in the group. I made it very seriously. In my Dream poster, I wrote :
“ My dream is to have a peaceful family. I hope many peaceful family are born all around the world”.

To tell the truth, I was single and I had no plan to have a family of my own at that time. After the camp finished, I put my dream poster on my room’s wall and looked at it every day. And then……after 2 years, I met my present partner and we are blessed with a baby boy.

Well, now I can say that 'Dream Poster' is really effective! When we can make the image clearly, it is input in our brain and we unconsciously changed our words and actions .
It’s like…WOW!

How is yours? What happened to you after making your dream poster? Now I am very confident to say peaceful world starts from a peaceful family. Because I think peace is in each of our “KOKORO”. Even it’s a very small action, everything is connected to making a peaceful world.

I am going to make my next Dream Poster......

Do you know about MUNK and EMUNK?

Hello EIC family members!

Have you heard about MUNK and EMUNK?
Tatsu, Mika and I visited Kumon Kokusai Gakuen to observe MUNK and EMUNK.
MUNK means Model United Nations of Kumon and EMUNK means English Model United Nations of Kumon.  MUNK and EMUNK is the one of school activities at Kumon Gakuen.

The participants are junior high or high school students.  One student represents one country, as an ambassador.  They discuss world issues.  This time, the topic was the ”Abolition of human trafficking”（人身売買）  I think this topic would be difficult to discuss even if it were in Japanese.  On February 11th, the language was all English!  I was so impressed!


 But what I was surprised most by was that we found 4 EIC participants in this activity!  Hiroto(EIC2008 Hachikogen) attended MUNK and EMUNK!  In the MUNK, he raised his hands and asked some questions several times.


  I was really really encouraged by his attitude and courage!  In the EMUNK, about 80% of participants are returnees.  Hiroto is the only one who is not a returnee in his group.  But he spoke out his opinion in his group and also he shared his opinion in front of everyone in English!

An interesting internet site called freerice.com was introduced at EMUNK. At that site, you can play an English vocabulary quiz. If you can choose a right answer, that site will donate 10 grains of rice through the World Food Programme to help end hunger.

Hokkaido English Camp!

 Hello! How are you? We hope all of you are doing well.

Global Network Team members went to Hokkaido in January.
We visited and observed Hokkaido English Camp which was held by the Education Bureau of Hokkaido prefecture.

In the camp, high school students communicated in English and debated about English Education and had a presentation about Hokkaido trip. Their English level was so high although they are not school children who have returned from abroad.Camp manager said they made a lot of efforts at home, such as reading English books, watching English TV programs and so on. We impressed by their efforts.

We believe EIC family members also continue to study English.

We are happy to hear good news that they passed STEP EIKEN, went abroad and so on.

Festival in my unversity!!!

Hello everyone!! This is Alex, EIC Camp leader in 2011 and 2012 from Romenia!

Last month we had Tenkusai Festival (School festival) in our university, APU(Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University). At this time each circlehas the opportunity to cook is cooking a special food and sells it to the visitors in campus. There were are also many many performances and exiting activities like Ghost House, exhibitions and watching movies too.

But I am sure everybody likes to eat, right? And everybody likes sweets, right?

So this year my circle sold Korean street food called Hotteok. Do you know Hotteok?

It is a small pancake and inside it hashave cinnamon, and peanuts and banana.

We sold 700 pieces of our cake and make the record in the whole festival. I think this is because we all have many friends and they spread the word of ouryour delicious food.




In our circle stall, System Assistant (SA)we have also many Camp Leaders like Stefanie, Ivan, Perm, Lin, Channa, and Kat.

They all helped to make the cake from morning 10:00 until 17:00 and it was very very fun. Also we met Camp Staff and they bought our food too. We were so happy.

If you have time, you should come next year too.
Tenkusai is very very fun and next year we will sell Hotteok again!

☆HALLOWEEN☆

Hello everyone! This is Yafu EIC Camp leader from 2009 to 2012 from Malawi. Did you enjoy Halloween?

Every year I tried to dress up in a different costume for Halloween. Most people like wearing scary costumes of ghosts, witches or zombies. I like to wear funny costumes and go out and meet friends or go to a Halloween party.

This year I went to Beppu in Oita and I met camp leaders and other friends. Many people dressed up in different costumes and I was so amazed. There was a Halloween party and a competition for the best costume. Unfortunately I did not win and I was a little sad. But I was happy because I met my friends.
